Greens and browns are two especially important things to take into consideration when composting. They make up two vital groups that should be as balanced as best as possible in your compost for the best results. Greens are usually very nitrogen-based and fresh, wet, and heavy. An example of a green is a banana or orange peel. Browns on the other hand tend to be more carbon-rich and older, dryer, and lighter. An example of a brown is old dead autumn leaves.
